How Tiny Habits Fast-Tracked My Promotion

When I started my job during COVID, I had one goal: to make a meaningful impact. However, I quickly realized that this broad goal wasn’t enough. Instead, I needed a system to ensure consistent progress. That’s when I turned to tiny habits.

YOUR SUCCESS AWAITS…

I did my research on tiny habits and became obsessed! I mean, small, intentional actions I could repeat every day that would help me reach my goals?...yes, please!

From then on, tiny habits became the foundation of my professional growth and success allowing me to get a promotion within 1 year, earn industry-recognized certifications, and receive my Masters Degree.

Here are my 3 tiny habits that I implemented daily to help me advance and fast-track my career. I’ll be covering:

1.      Building Trust Through Consistency

2.      Prioritizing Professional Development

3.      Reflecting & Adapting

So if you’re ready to kickstart your career into high gear – look no further. You’re in the right place - here’s how these habits helped me stand out and earn a promotion within my first year!

I started my job right after graduating college and was the youngest in my team, likely the whole company. Talk about feeling out of place. Genuinely for the first few months, I would sit in the car and eat my lunch because there was already an established dynamic group of my coworkers who would get together.

I felt alone and isolated, and I wanted a change. I wanted to make an impact and how could I do that by sitting in my car to eat lunch alone?

I was initially scared and unsure of where to go or how to start making this shift, so I did some research.

I found out that my most meaningful impact lied in the habits and tasks I performed daily. To do this, I decided to make some small shifts in my daily routines and see how my team and supervisor would react **spoiler alert – they loved it!!**

So, I started small. I learned strong organizational skills in college so I figured this would be an easy place to start and make slight adjustments.

CONSISTENCY

One of the first habits I implemented was sending weekly recap emails to my manager. However, instead of a regular boring old bullet point list of what I did that day, I decided to switch it up. My format became:

1.      Highlights from this week

a.      Extracurriculars & Networking

2.      Upcoming activities for next week

a.      Extracurriculars & Networking

This format was game-changing.

Not only did I list out my key accomplishments, I made sure to make my supervisor aware of my upcoming obligations and responsibilities. Additionally, if there had been a change in plans where an event was no longer taking place, she had access to see my schedule in 1 email and notify me right away so I could better use my time.

This habit showcased my reliability and commitment to exceeding expectations, earning my supervisors' trust, respect, and praise for my innovation. Over time, this habit became second nature, and it was an easy way to consistently communicate my upcoming schedule and prioritizations with her.

PRIORITIZING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

I have always had a strong desire to continue learning, but when I entered this new job, I felt overwhelmed by my responsibilities, so outside learning became a secondary thought.

I decided that for me to maintain my growth development mindset, I’d have to make learning a bigger priority.

In doing so, I began time-blocking and scheduling 10 minutes on my calendar to learn something new. This could be anything—a video, a LinkedIn learning course, an article on leadership or hybrid work environments, or even a YouTube video on Excel basics.

Those 10 minutes added up over time and within months, I became the go-to person for training on new tools or shortcuts and helpful hints in Microsoft Office.

This allowed me to bond more with my coworkers and become a valuable asset to the company. Learning this habit helped me gain outside knowledge, get closer with my coworkers and also being able to implement what I learned to improve processes and work more efficiently – win/win!

REFLECTING & ADAPTING

At the end of each week, I would spend a few minutes reviewing my highlights (biggest wins) and some personal areas for improvement. These varied from week to week, but they could include doing a great job giving a presentation to prospective candidates while also struggling with conflict resolution tactics in a group project.

Reflecting allowed me to turn my attention to areas and patterns where I am doing well and where I am having issues. From there, I’d look at my areas for improvement and see how I could improve. It was not enough to acknowledge that I had a tough conversation, I had to make a change if I wanted to make an impact. This required me to learn more about that area, see what methods I could try moving forward and adapt my strategy for the next group meeting to see if there’s a different outcome.

This habit kept me aligned with my goals, acknowledging my strengths and paying close attention to my areas for improvement. By noticing and taking the time to reflect, I was able to stay proactive in addressing challenges and become noticed as willing to take the initiative to solve problems before they became a larger concern for my team.

Once I started implementing these 3 tiny habits in my work routine, it snowballed into significant outcomes, and I saw incredible results!

By the time my one-year work anniversary rolled around, I had not only exceeded my goals but also built a reputation as a team member who brought value, creativity, and initiative to the table.

When the opportunity for a promotion came about, I was the clear choice and personally asked to step into my new role.
